What are some differentiating and ongoing structures, models and viewpoints applied inside the field of IHRM? The significance of International Human Resource Management (IHRM) turns out to be increasingly more significant over the most recent couple of years. The first run through the term IHRM was utilized was in 1990, around a similar timespan ââ¬Ëglobalisationââ¬â¢ started. At first the fundamental capacity of IHRM was the association and the board of exiles (Festing, et al. , 2013, p. 161). In 2012 the outside associates of Multinational Enterprises (MNEs) of the United Nations had arrived at 69 million specialists (Dowling, et al., 2013, p. viii). Because of this reality it turns out to be clear the colossal test IHRM faces presently. Moreover the world is getting increasingly uniform and normalized due to the globalization. With the effect of specialized, business and social turn of events, organizations must adapt to the situation and an alternate perspective (Durham Kellner, 2006, p. 659). On the off chance that we put all the various perspectives together we can characterize IHRM as inspecting the HRM issues, issues, techniques, approaches and practices which firms seek after comparable to the internationalization of their business (Brewster, et al., 2011, p. 10). Based on ebb and flow inquire about, this exposition will research slants and developing issues in the field of IHRM. In the principal wide field of worldwide assignments and vocations there have been changes as of late because of the improvement of innovation and overall mix. As associations are progressively influenced by the powers of globalization and the opposition between the various organizations, the requirements for workers are expanding too. Because of these realities, the work life balance (WLB) has been liable to expanding examination and has prompted a noteworthy rising issue for all individuals particularly universal business explorers (Festing, et al., 2013). As a consequence,à WLB is getting consideration in the IHRM field. WLB comprises of two distinct ideas: accomplishment and happiness. You can't get the full an incentive from life on the off chance that you are just focused on one idea (WorkLifeBalance, 2014). Oneââ¬â¢s every day center around accomplishment and delight is situated in each of the four life quadrants: work, family, companions and self WLB. WLB is now a critica l theme for HRM, anyway it is considerably increasingly significant for visit voyagers. Because of this reality, in the field of IHRM, work life balance has beenâ investigated by Iris Kollinger-Santer and Iris C. Fischlmayr (2013). They concentrated on the contrast among female and male global explorers and their WLB, finding that the various stressors identified with voyaging have a variable force as indicated by sexual orientation. For example, the absence of time for social contact or relaxation exercises is a more grounded pressure factor for ladies than for men. The family circumstance specifically is a significant impact on every sexual orientation, with ladies missing their family more than men. Adapting procedures likewise change as per sexual orientation (Kollinger-Santer Fischlmayr). Beauregard and Henry (2009) carry various ideas to the issue of WLB. These creators attempt to make a connection between work life balance rehearses and hierarchical execution. Consequently they talk about the contrasting significance of elements as indicated by national setting, work level, and administrative help and arrive at the resolution that WLB rehearses are frequently joined with high hierarchical execution (Beau regards Henry). Another rising test alongside WLB is the various sorts of worldwide assignments. As of late, working abroad as an ostracize to get universal experience and to create worldwide abilities was viewed as a significant expertise. Associations straightforwardly advanced this procedure. They needed to give their representatives work understanding and rise above national limits. Be that as it may, representatives are regularly reluctant to work abroad or the individuals who areâ willing to work abroad are leaving their worldwide assignments early or stopping their associations once they repatriate in view of the beneficial outcomes, for example, advancements and compensation progression. Another viewpoint that favors this circumstance is to make up for the far out, out-ofmind issue that happens when representatives are genuinely away from their home countryââ¬â¢s association (Shaffer, et al.). Because of this reality another developing issue is occurring inside IHRM. Associations are searching for worldwide work options for their representatives to increase worldwide work understanding without losing the worker a while later. Other than the notable sorts of work understanding, for example, corporate exile or self-started exile, some better approaches to accomplish worldwide work experience are presently offered to representatives. Shaffer et al. (2012) summarizes the current approaches to accomplish universal work understanding and partitioned them along the three measurements; physical portability, psychological adaptability, and nonwork interruptions. In light of this information, the creators decipher the significant discoveries from their audit and build up a scientific categorization of these encounters as a hypothetical system for breaking down past examinations. They bring up that the entirety of the worldwide workâ experiences were related with various individual and nonwork requests particularly, stress and family issues. Be that as it may, Shaffer et al. guarantee that the particular pressure factor fluctuated by the various kinds of worldwide work understanding. At long last, they presume that the genuine test isn't the various sorts of worldwide work, however is the mix of truly moving to an outside nation with the family and figuring out how to adjust to another culture that makes one of a kind family requests related with ostracize assignments (Shaffer, et al.). Notwithstanding the new techniques to get worldwide work understanding, Vaiman and Haslberger (2013) center around the significance ofâ self-started exiles and investigate outside officials in neighborhood associations (FELOs). A FELO is an uncommon worldwide crosscultural the executives marvel. To discover the contrasts between an exile task and a FELO, one must investigate the auxiliaries of global associations (FELO Research, 2014). Vaiman and Haslberger determine four distinct sorts of FELOs and different kinds of confined FELOs just as typologies and association structures. At last they inspect worldwide vocations outside of customary, organization supported exile assignments, and feature the way that there is a rising number of remote officials delegated as of late (Vaiman Haslberger). Worldwide ability the executives (GTM) is a quickly developing field inside IHRM. GTM incorporates the association between the significance of ability the executives and achievement in worldwide business. When all is said in done the point of ability the board is the recognizable proof of very much qualified workers in a worldwide setting and putting those individuals in key positions where they can possibly affect the upper hand of the association (Scullion Collings, 2011, pp. 3-4). GTM is as yet a rising field with discusses in regards to numerous parts of its importance IHRM (Festing, et al., 2013). For example, Schuler et al. (2012) center around different difficulties in the region of GTM like managing ability deficiencies, ability surpluses, finding and migrating ability, and pay levels of ability. They present vital chances and their suggestions for associations with respect to these difficulties, reasoning that hierarchical need must be connected to the bearing of authoritative system and ability technique specifically (Schuler, et al.). Plainly there is a wide region of undefined themes in the field of GTM. In nations, for example, Germany, China or India, look into regarding this matter is especially constrained, consequently there has been a lot of discussion over the proceeding with essentialness of ability the executives in the ongoing years. There are two distinct perspectives on the significance and the effect of talentâ management (Festing, et al., 2013) According to Walk et al. (2013), ability is the most reliable and incessant factor in business accomplishment inside a worldwide setting. Therefore, associations contend across fringes to get the most skilled workers. The creators found that from the angle of an association, multifaceted understudies are the most significant, accordingly they will in general enlist their future workers from this gathering. Walk et al. additionally survey work desires across different social foundations and inferred that distinctions in desire are less between Chinese, Indian, and German understudies than one may presume (Cf. Walk, et al.).à Ewerlinââ¬â¢s (2013) look into on GTM focusses because of ability the board programââ¬â¢s engaging quality on a business. Because of the way that capable people are uncommon, associations need to take care that they can situate themselves as appealing businesses so as to make sure about the best workers. Skilled representatives can single out between a few appealing bids for employment, accordingly they are searching for an extra factors, for example, great ability the executives programs. Ewerlin couldn't affirm that there is an immediate connection between boss engaging quality and their GTM program, anyway she demonstrates that these projects ought to be intended for socially contrasts and that character likewise assumes a significant job in molding the necessities of individual representatives (Ewerlin). In the event that you think about the present patterns and rising issues of IHRM to the improvement of different divisions inside an association, particularly because of the impact of different territories, there is consistent change in IHRM. Also to the steady changes IHRM have made, there are a ton of expanding variables to the worldwide market. A few perspectives are pivotal in the two gigantic fields of worldwide assignments and vocations and worldwide work understanding. In the main field there matthewhawkins66http://www.blogger.com/profile/09887578763750688853noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3888173869769077370.post-82831972929586297312020-07-14T07:13:00.001-07:002020-07-14T07:13:04.692-07:00Peeking Over Their Shoulder See What Rioters Are Reading TodayPeeking Over Their Shoulder See What Rioters Are Reading Today In this feature at Book Riot, we give you a glimpse of what we are reading this very moment. Child abuse is more than bruises and broken bones. While physical abuse might be the most visible, other types of abuse, such as emotional abuse and neglect, also leave deep, lasting scars. (Smith, and Segal). There are four types of child abuse, physical, emotional, sexual, and neglect. Physical abuse is any type of injury a child may receive, such as scars, bruises, and other visible injuries, which can occur from hitting, slapping, kicking and other types of violence. Emotional abuse is the use of slanderous and hurtful words that can cut deep into a child. Such as constant yelling or threatening, and making negative comments. Sexual abuse isâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦(McCarthy). Corporal Punishment is no more than discipline of how to teach a child right from wrong. Children often challenge parents by misbehaving in order to get what they want, for example attention, objects, or app roval; however it all comes with consequence. (Strauss) Most people in todayââ¬â¢s society view corporal punishment as child abuse. In 2004, Court was held in Maryland, Charles County Department of Social Services versus Vann of the difference between reasonable punishment and child abuse. The court eventually ruled that reasonable corporal punishment is not child abuse. (McCarthy). This was just one of the many cases that disprove corporal punishment being child abuse. In other news a recent poll was taken on whether or not corporal punishment would promote well disciplined students, and fifty-two percent said yes while forty-eight percent said no. (Debate.org) Where corporal punishment is mostly referred to is in the school system. A list that was taken and last updated in 2008 showed that twenty-two states still allow a form of corporal punishment, while there are now twenty-eight states that have banned the use of it. (InfoPlease). While the number of states that do not su pport corporal punishment outweigh the number that do, this does not mean that most teachers in the school systems find that they agree with that policy being illegal. Parental dispositions toward their special child are crucial to the childââ¬â¢s progress in their individual growth and development. Fortunately, great strides in researches and/or studies in a specific disability had been made and implemented in private and public sectors. We will write a custom essay sample on Disabilities Websites: A review or any similar topic only for you Order Now The global internet community keeps abreast with the latest breakthroughs also. The following review of choiced websites has their own strengths and weaknesses as they try to be of help not only to the physically or mentally challenged themselves, but especially to their caregivers ââ¬â the parents. Discussion A. Provide a brief summary of each website. 1. Blind website Features: Blind Resource center a. Information about blindness b. Newsletter for account members c. Education and development d. Independent movement and travel- workshops or seminars designed for greater independence and mobility. e. Sports, games, and travel Description/Discussion: This is considered a good resource center for families with a blind child or children. It provides current advances or innovations meant to enhance the capabilities and minimize difficulties of the blind. For the curious and the people who are just embarking onto becoming a volunteer or potential caregiver for the blind, the cyber site provides an introductory portion to describe what it likes to be blind, broad and specific definitions of blindness; some limitations that typify their experiences with life. Moreover, they provide rich resources for the blind individual including educational opportunities, workshops and/or seminars for improvement of their welfare; their adjustments with society at large. Comments/Recommendations: Children with this kind of disability will greatly be enriched with the resources of this website. Personally, in my own opinion, it has reached the minimum requirements for a website that somehow contributes to a certain extent, something to the target population. However, I should say that with regards aesthetic values, the website can do much improvement in enhancing its attractiveness with regards style. Although blind individuals are their primary clients, there many curious visitors who may visit them who will benefit from their resources and attractiveness in terms of web appearance are of great value. Secondly, I have not noticed a ââ¬Å"BrowseAloudâ⬠component similar with that found in the NDCCD website, which is vital specifically for the blind person. Thirdly, for teachers who handle this kind of job, I think, the website should provide for such a category; not just for parents and the children with the disability. Teachers can still benefit from accessing the website though (http://www. blindchildren. org/). 2. Deaf website Description: American Society for Deaf Children (ASDC) Features: Resources a. Membership Privileges b. Convention c. Magazine d. Other resources: ââ¬Å"1. ) Communication Access. We believe deaf or hard-of-hearing children are entitled to full communication access in their home, school, and community. We also believe that language development, respect for the Deaf, and access to deaf and hard-of-hearing role models are important to assure optimal intellectual, social, and emotional development. 2. ) Child. We believe there should be access to identification and intervention by qualified providers, family involvement, and educational opportunities equal to those provided for hearing children. The goal should be to provide children what they need in order to become self-supporting and fulfilled adults. . ) Parent. We affirm that parents have the right and responsibility to be primary decision-makers and advocates. For this role, parents need education, access to information, and support. â⬠Description/Discussion: This is a good website with various features both for the parents and the deaf child with different features as promoted by the website such as standard membership privileges, and convention/workshops. Comments/Recommendations: In terms of its features, the website still lacks a lot of amenities, like more activities for the deaf child. Although, ââ¬Å"physical appealâ⬠is already evident in the way people behind the web had put their efforts into, there are still rooms for improvement. It looks simple and a lot more resources for parents should be added. Recommended for teachers with students who have hearing disabilities, although with some limitations because the primary recipients are only for the parents and their children with the disability (http://www. deafchildren. org/) National Dissemination Center for Children with Disabilities. Features: a. Multilingual b. Provision of a ââ¬Å"BrowseAloudâ⬠text reader. . Government policies update on disabilities d. Other Government funded resources and researches Description: Excellent resource for the parents and children with a variety of disabilities, especially with its ââ¬Å"BrowseAloudâ⬠text reader, accessibility for those with disabilities is enhanced. Provision for funding and update of government projects toward the disabled is also posted periodically in the website. This is important for people/parents or families concerned, and also for advocates. Teachers can benefit a lot from the website. Comment/Recommendation: Understandably, this is one website that many concerned parties are significantly benefited, hence, highly recommended to the curious and those who need resources for research, etc. There is still room for upgrading and development though when it comes to attractive appeal and other resources. The website should provide more pictures and activities update. B. Compare and contrast the 3 selected websites. Given the description and comments, obviously, the third website is the most advanced or developed from among the three where the criteria on appeal, resources for concerned parties are concerned (http://www. ichcy. org/(National Dissemination Center for Students with Disabilities). Discuss what you found to be relevant and useful to you as a teacher and what you did not. As a teacher, the first two websites are more basic, while the third can be classified as more advanced than the first two; hence I derive much help and assistance in terms of my professional objectives in career and educational requirements from the NDCCD website. I highly recommend the NDCCD website to my colleagues. They will profit from the three websites, but especially in the NDCCD cyber net compared to the other two. "Mississippi" opens with outrage of hatred and massive of violence to stop voter registration drive and any change in the Mississippi state. The citizens of US can identify that had a horrible history on fighting for equality, especially in the South area of Mississippi. Mississippi take place in the civil right movement around 1962 til 1964 for it people and land to integrated and welcome the rest of the America. To change Mississippi and it white southern, they would risk beatings, arrest, and killing their lives. Many states in the US have had their share of discrimination, but Mississippi has by far been the worst. In 1954 the citizens council was established in the delta, the northwest section of the state where blacks outnumbered whites. The council purpose was to preserve the white political power by opposing integration. Banker, politicians and ow ner of businesses in the citizen council throughout the south and would punished people who supported integration or black voting rights which foreclosing mortgages, firing workers, or refusing loans to frames. Also use they influence to put through laws that would insure continues white domination. However the center of Mississippi struggle for power due to the black vote. In some Counties black would outnumbered the white vote four to one, which that be a pretty huge record in today generation. In 1962, blacks were not allow to registered in many counties. Black was being put off the plantations, threatened to put them in jails, and some would even be murdered just because they wanted to register to vote and stop any kind of blacks politician activity which made registration more difficult. As the struggle of voting right escalated in the delta, tension build in Jackson Mississippi where the state capital and the last stop of the freedom rides in 1961. Medgar Ever s, the leader of NAACP state field secretary who organized a boycott of downtown businesses in Jackson, Mississippi capital as part of the fight against segregation. He also help supported James Meredith during the battle to integrate the university of Mississippi to enroll. Medgar Evers has been assassinated in front of his driveway soon he got home. The sad thing is the police would even attack the black southern at Medgar funeral just to get them off the street and stop marching and making a big crowd for his funeral. His assassination motivated Bob Moses, who field director of the SNCC, to join local activists in a high-risk voter registration drive. Along with activists from the CORE and SNCC, Moses, announced plans for an interracial campaign called "Freedom Summer". Three man from Freedom summer Andrew Goodman, James Chaney, and Michael Schweitzer went to go investigate the burning of black Methodist church that had been the scene of civil right meeting just week befor e it was burn down. A Deputy sheriff stop the three man outside the town by Philadelphia and was release that night. With in days, they disappeared and went to national news. They was found in an "Earthen Damn", as the video showed, along with thirteen other bodies. Segregationists in Mississippi were so impassioned against blacks receiving an education or the right to vote, they literary to drastic measures against their own people, which were a handful of whites that had sympathy for blacks. Mississippi still wasn't at peace! The black of Mississippi created they own party known as The National Democratic Party, because they would get literacy test or oral exam that created a way for black to black and reject them for voting. This made blacks want to protest this allegation above the state because now that integration had been achieved so much so far, they were now citizens which meant they had the right to vote as much as any white person did. They march to the convention they were denied of being able to sit in the ceremony due to discrimination but was offered for just two people may sit in. They declined that offer and felt that they didn't march all the way to be offered only two seats. In 1965 they finally granted the right to have a vote, matthewhawkins66http://www.blogger.com/profile/09887578763750688853noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3888173869769077370.post-1176430675729429712020-03-17T19:52:00.001-07:002020-03-17T19:52:03.911-07:00A Belief System- The Crucible Essays - Salem Witch TrialsA Belief System- The Crucible Essays - Salem Witch Trials A Belief System- The Crucible After reading The Crucible by Arthur Miller, one cannot help but wonder why when given the chance to confess to the accusations and live, did the characters choose to stay firm and die? For people today that question is not easily answered. In the past however, this was not a question at all. The answer was found within the strong religious background that most of the accused were raised on, and the feeling of pride and honor they felt in their hearts. John Proctor exemplifies the importance of a strong name through his actions and choices throughout the play; most significantly the fourth act when he chose death over disgracing his name. Giles Corey's refusal to reveal the name of the informant who accused Putnam of conspiracy also shows the role of justice in these individuals' lives, letting God be the judge of their actions in life and not their peers. Sometimes you have to stand for more. Throughout the play one of the central themes continues to be John Proctors, Giles Coreys, and Rebecca Nurses refusal to degrade their souls with lies of confession only to save themselves from the unjust accusations of witchcraft. In this time and era the people living in and around Salem, Massachusetts were from Puritan faith and lived very strict lives. At this point in history there was still no separation between church and state, so the church had a major role in each individuals life. When Reverend Parris came upon the children of Salem dancing and conducting against their religion, they were accused of being in a pact with the devil by many of the towns people in the beginning. Rumors spread, and innocent people were charged of witchcraft. Some of the accused were, in every aspect, a perfect Puritan. Rebecca Nurse was one of these individuals. She was held in high opinion by almost everyone, except for Ann Putnam, who blamed her for the unexplained deaths of her seven children Rebecca had delivered. Ann Putnam claimed that Rebecca sent her spirit out on them. At one point there was even a testament signed and proposed in court declaring many peoples good opinion of Goody Nurse. Giles Corey was an old, s trong-willed man, accused of witchery. After trying to disprove the faulty actions of the court and refusing to give up the name of his informant he was killed. Proctor was accused of witchcraft while trying to defend his wife, and was then later executed when he refused to slander his name. These three proud individuals did not want to confess to the lies they were accused of doing only to save their lives. For what is a name when you have no soul to go with it? That is what these individuals faced. The religious background of these individuals was the cause of their refusal to confess to the accusations toward them. Both Giles Corey and John Proctor believed in letting God be the judge of their faults. When Giles Corey refused to answer to his indictment in order to preserve his land's ownership for his family, he was trusting in a higher power, God, even when death was his punishment. Proctor also felt this way, and when arguing with Danforth about his confession of adultery, he turned to God as his judge when he said, I have confessed myself! Is there no good penitence but it be public? God does not need my name nailed upon the church! God sees my name; God knows how black my sins are! It is enough! (4.132). These two individuals lost hope in the justice system that ruled their lives here on earth, so instead they decided to put their trust in their religious background and their belief in God as the definitive judge. Times have changed since the era in which John, Giles, and Rebecca lived. During the Salem witch trials confessing to a lie to save your life was an option many people chose, others did not out of a sense of pride and honor. John Proctor was the perfect example of this. He had self-respect, particularly for his name. After verbally admitting his sin, Danforth wished for him to sign matthewhawkins66http://www.blogger.com/profile/09887578763750688853noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3888173869769077370.post-31719394101260454312020-03-01T11:39:00.001-08:002020-03-01T11:39:03.434-08:00The top 5 education jobs for 2018The top 5 education jobs for 2018 ââ¬Å"I should teachâ⬠is the common refrain of people everywhere who are fed up with their jobs at any given moment, but actually taking steps toward making that switch takes a lot more than temporary frustration. The play Midsummer night's dream revolves around the fundamental difficulties of love. Through out the play this universal concept has been discussed through the effective use of contrast. Shakespeare has used symbolism to develop his ideas in the play and to present a fair view regarding the theme. In Act I, scene I Theseus and Hippolyta discuss their wedding which is to scheduled in four days, from here the story begins and the play gradually describes the ideas of love and the magical powers of dreams. Shakespeare presents his personal views on love with the help of this play. An analysis of the play points out that Shakespeare was of the view that although love is a beautiful emotion cherished by all individuals but finding love is the hardest of all as an individual has to face a lot of tension and stress to find love. The central idea of the play is to prove that a childish love, which is known as teenage love, is foolish in nature. He has included four central characters in the play which are young children who fall in love with the young girls. Eventually at the end of the play, they discover their foolishness. William successfully conveyed his message that teenage love is slightly foolish in nature. The other play under scrutiny is the Twelfth Night which is most simply put is a story of cross dressing and mistaken identity. It is filled with sexual tension between characters and poetic words on love. Twelfth Night is nearly as much a study of service and master-servant relations as it is a comedy of romantic love. The relationships and tensions between lovers are clearly discernible in the play's manifold variations. Viola's status as Orsino's servant is the condition of possibility and impossibility of her love for him and also of Olivia's erotic desire for her as Cesario; Orsino himself embodies courtly infatuation as a form of service in his dotage on Olivia; Malvolio exemplifies, Sonnet-like, the servant's fantasy of social elevation through erotic conquest; Antonio's homoerotic affection for Sebastian restates in a different key courtly devotion to the belove. O spirit of love, how quick and fresh art thou, That notwithstanding thy capacity Receiveth as the sea, naught enters there, Of what validity and pitch so'er, But falls into abatement and low price Even in a minute. (1.1.9-14) Orsino's opening meditation on his unrequited love for Olivia encompasses some of the most famous lines and images in the whole Shakespeare canon. The lines also identify the major themes and concerns of Twelfth Night. In the lines above, the references to love and to the sea encompass elements that will resound throughout the action of the play. Orsino compares the capacity of love to the capacity of the ocean in its ability to be. The third play is the Merchant of Venice which centers on the struggle between Portia and Antonio for Bassanio's affection, or the competition between friendship and marriage. In the Elizabethan context Antonio and Bassanio's relationship does not matthewhawkins66http://www.blogger.com/profile/09887578763750688853noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3888173869769077370.post-61176469142594926102020-02-01T15:53:00.001-08:002020-02-01T15:53:03.036-08:00Why poverty was re-discovered in Britain in the late 1950s and early EssayWhy poverty was re-discovered in Britain in the late 1950s and early 1960 - Essay Example Britainââ¬â¢s share of world trade fell from 13.9% to 10.8% during this time. Taxation increased from 32% of GDP to 43% of GDP. Economic planning had failed and this failure precluded major social planning despite the fact that some social reforms such as the launch of comprehensive education, reorganization of public transport, development in health and local government. Abel-Smith and Townsend are credited with the "rediscovery of poverty" in the 1960ââ¬â¢s: noticed that certain categories such as, families with children on low incomes and retired couples often lived in difficult circumstances. The definition of poverty adopted by Abel-Smith and Peter Townsend in their 1965 study, was the concept of ââ¬Å"The Poor and the Poorestâ⬠. They concluded that "poverty was entirely a relative concept," and defined households to be in, or at the margins of, poverty if their income was less than "140 percent of the then current National Assistance scale plus rent". In 1960, 17.9% of households lived below this relative poverty standard. An unknown, but significantly smaller, share of the population had incomes below the "physical efficiency" or "human needs" poverty lines. (Ian Gazeley, Poverty in Britain 1900-1965) There was a strong case for saying that socially deprived families are frequently found in confined geographical areas identifiable by certain physical and social characteristics. Examples of these characteristics: geographical location, "twilight zones" near a cityââ¬â¢s business area; areas populated by immigrants; overcrowded and poor amenities, Victorian housing stock; areas with a high percentage of unskilled and semi-skilled workers; higher than average proportions of families on State benefits; higher than normal percentage of large families; large number of fatherless families; areas with little play space and recreational facilities; areas with poorer health; high percentage of child deprivation and delinquency. matthewhawkins66http://www.blogger.com/profile/09887578763750688853noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3888173869769077370.post-5820656715557277562020-01-24T12:17:00.001-08:002020-01-24T12:17:03.084-08:00The Optimists Daughter: Hidden Depression Essay -- Literary Analysis,A smile has the incredible ability to hide anything. ââ¬Å"The funny thing is, nobody ever really knows how much anybody else is hurting. We could be standing next to somebody who is completely broken and we wouldnââ¬â¢t even know itâ⬠(Anonymous). Many people in our world internally suffer. Some may say that ââ¬Å"[t]he hardest years in life are those between ten and seventyâ⬠(Anonymous). During these years of life, people face an uncountable number of struggles and are exposed the true disfigurement of the world. When people undergo extreme or stressful situations that they cannot possibly handle and face the grief-stricken tragedies of the world, such as death, they normally fall into a dark hole called depression. Depression resides everywhere and it has existed for centuries. Throughout the years, however, it has progressively gotten worse. During the 1970s, depression constituted a less severe issue than it does in todayââ¬â¢s society. In the 1970s, depress ion started to gain more attention as such an extensive problem, and began affecting humanity at a more youthful age as the years continued. The number of people suffering from depression today has nearly doubled since the 1970s. However, depression presents just as much of a concern today as it has in the past. In The Optimist's Daughter, Eudora Welty portrays depression through the juxtaposition of characters, her use of symbolism, and verbal irony portrayed throughout the novel. The juxtaposition of characters Laurel, Fay, and Judge McKelva contains the differences of how depression affects each individual. In the beginning of the novel, the author declares: ââ¬Å"[f]or a long time Judge McKelva was seen as a reassuring figure by the many who knew and liked himâ⬠(Welty 170). However, this d... ...hen you know it isn'tâ⬠(Anonymous). Perhaps this answers why depression remains such a huge issue in todayââ¬â¢s world. When one acts as if he/she is content and conceals his/her bona fide feelings of anguish, no warning signs present anything being wrong. Others do not notice the true suffering that takes place within that person. Without the awareness and cognizance of this suffering, the unacknowledged depression could potentially lead to an even more immense issue. In fact, major depression usually results in suicide attempts. Statistics declare that, on average, someone attempts suicide every forty seconds in the United States. Suicide is the eleventh leading cause of death among Americans (Caruso). Not being able to admit to something only makes it worse, and the outcomes could be fatal. Bottling up feelings of depression will only result in a deeper depression. matthewhawkins66http://www.blogger.com/profile/09887578763750688853noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3888173869769077370.post-60516881931958380502020-01-16T08:41:00.001-08:002020-01-16T08:41:03.933-08:00Improving Oral Healthcare In Hospitals Health And Social Care EssayThe initial inspiration for this proposal was a conversation with co-workers which so progressed into an experimental study over a period of eight hours. Ten staff nurses and one sister so took portion in replying a questionnaire. ( See appendix 1 for consequences ) The infirmary where I work does hold a attention program for unwritten hygiene ( see appendix 2 ) but it was designed for ââ¬Ëgeneral usage ââ¬Ë instead than to run into the specific demands of automatically ventilated patients ( MVP ) . It shortly became evident from the consequences and the conversations that there was a demand for an assessment tool and guidelines as to what was considered to be best pattern to run into the single demands of MVP. This is when and why my undertaking began.4.2 ImportantDeoxyribonucleic acid surveies have confirmed that up to 90 % of Ventilated Associated Pneumonia ( VAP ) is caused by pathogens colonizing the oral cavity. Within hours of admittance into the Intensive Care Unit ( IC U ) , the unwritten physiology of the patient begins altering. ( Nieuw Amerongen 2007 ) A Survey by Schleder & A ; Lloyd ( 2002 ) has associated chest infection and pneumonia with hapless unwritten hygiene. Ventilator associated pneumonia ( VAP ) is the taking cause of decease among hospital-acquired infections. ( Bercault and Boulain, 2001 ) . ( Claridge, Edwards, Swanson, Fabian, EL at 2007 ) ( Kollef 2004 ) . After several yearss in the ICU, the intubated patient ââ¬Ës unwritten pathogen population rises to a higher per centum of beings increasing the hazard of VAP, their length of stay and mortality. VAP costs by and large range from $ 12,000 to $ 40,000 per patient. Crude mortality rates range from 27 % -76 % . ( Jones, Newton, and Bower 2004 )4.3 Policy DriversThe triggers for improved oral cavity attention have come from Department of Health ( DoH ) brochure entitled ââ¬ËDelivering Better Oral Health ââ¬Ë . An evidence-based toolkit for bar was published in September 2007. Older people are at considerable hazard of unwritten infection, with infection identified in 80 % of one survey population ( DoH, 2007 ) , There are indicants that 69 % of grownups may hold periodontic disease. With current regional alveolar consonant attending runing from 40 % in southern countries to 60 % in the North East ( DoH, 2007 ) , it is sensible to presume that many patients might hold preexistent hapless unwritten wellness before contact with national wellness services ( NHS ) ( Nicol et al, 2005 ) . ( Xavier, 2000 ) . For the ICU the High Impact Intervention No 5 Care package for ventilated patients ( DoH 2006 ) merely advises ââ¬Ëthat everyday unwritten hygiene as per local policy ââ¬Ë is recommended. National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence ( NICE ) in their booklet on proficient patient safety solutions for ventilator-associated pneumonia in grownups recommends Chlorhexidine oral cavity rinse or gel to be used on MVP.4.3 Evidence to back up proposal. The revised Kernel of Care ( DoH, 2010 ) has proved to be an of import starting point for supplying grounds for the demand to develop an unwritten hygiene bundle for MVPs. The brochure sets out the criterion by which best pattern and attention is presently assessed or measured in order to help practicians to develop a patient-focused and structured attack to sharing and comparing pattern. It has enabled wellness attention forces to work with patients, or in some instances their relations, to place best pattern and to develop actio n programs to better attention. The Kernel of Care has twelve benchmarks, one being personal hygiene which consists of six factors. ( See appendix 3 for a elaborate list. ) This benchmark highlights mouth hygiene as a precedence. Therefore an appraisal must be done, the staff must be capable of executing the undertakings, their cognition must be appropriate, functional written records must be kept for scrutinizing and single unwritten pit cleaning equipment should be provided for each patient. The Centres for Disease Control ( CDC ) specifically advises that each ICU patient should be portion of an unwritten hygiene plan with frequent soft brushing of the dentitions and gum, oral cavity swobing with an antiseptic agent, and in the endotracheally intubated and automatically ventilated ( EIMV ) patient, frequent suctioning of the oral cavity and subglottic countries. A comprehensive reappraisal is to be found in Appendix 6 and is besides farther considered in the subdivision Literature Review ( 5.4 )5.1 AimThe purpose of this undertaking is to present an unwritten appraisal tool and a mouth hygiene cleaning protocol for ICU. It will be specifically used with patients who are automatically ventilated and will be supplemented with an educational bundle.5.2 Purpose of ProjectThe overall intent of my undertaking is to maintain patients safe and cut down the hazard of VAP. The unwritten pit has been identified as a possible menace. Nurses Code Number 35 *** mention states we must present attention based on the best available grounds or best pattern To make this a systematic procedure is required. Current pattern has excessively many failings. The current pattern is a simple tick box on the ICU chart simply entering that oral cavity attention has been performed. At present, mouth attention in many instances, merely consists of a pink sponge and unfertile H2O to wash the oral cavity, crude oil lip balm to halt the lips from checking and if the anesthesiologists remember, chlorhexidine gel prescribed four times a twenty-four hours. From my treatment with co-workers, evidenced by the questionnaire in Appendix 1, an unwritten appraisal is seldom done on patients with EIMV. Using a toothbrush, with fluoride toothpaste, is merely normally performed on patients who are non sedated, which could be 40 eight hours or longer after they were foremost intubated. Within 40 eight hours, the bacteriums in the oral cavity displacements from the normal dwellers to those that are the usual suspects for doing pneumonia: Staphylococcus aureus, Strep tococcus pneumonia, Pseudomonas. These pathogens exude substances in order to organize a biofilm matrix, or plaque. Within these protective shelters, bacteriums quickly multiply and spread throughout the unwritten pit. ICU nurses play a critical function in supplying effectual unwritten attention and advancing unwritten hygiene. However, unwritten hygiene by wellness attention workers has frequently been overlooked or performed on an ad hoc footing. In some cases, it has become a ritualistic and commonplace activity. The research is sporadic ensuing in conflicting advice to practicians. An illustration of this fickle advice is the debut of H peroxide and Na hydrogen carbonate being recommended as a gargle which if non diluted carefully will do superficial Burnss. It is still presently in usage in some ICUs. ( **Reference* ) This undertaking aims to rectify this incompatibility and give counsel and the tool for best patterns.5.3 Accomplish and Achieve.Ongoing unwritten appraisal should be performed day-to-day to forestall unwritten complications such as VAP and to guarantee optimum unwritten wellness ( Kollef 2004 ) . The assessment tool that I want to present on my ICU is based on the ââ¬ËBRUSHE D ââ¬Ë appraisal tool developed by Hayes and Jones. ( See appendix 5 ) It has antecedently been adapted to be used by ICU nurses to measure the grade of badness of the jobs happening in the patient ââ¬Ës unwritten pit. Abidia ( 2007 ) , Hayes & A ; Jones ( 1995 ) Using this tool, the ICU nurse could measure the gum for marks of disease. This review should include coloring materials, size, form, consistence and surface texture. Other marks to look for would be ulcerations or sores on the unwritten mucous membrane. After the appraisal the nurse will enter in item, in the patient notes, their observations. Any other appropriate action can so be taken before administrating unwritten hygiene. This tool was made to motivate nurses to look into for peculiar clinical marks during unwritten appraisal. Oral hygiene in the ICU is a normally performed nursing process in which the purpose is to guarantee that patients ââ¬Ë oral cavities are cared for ( Kite, Pearson1995. ) Pritchard and David ( 1988 ) indicate that oral cavity attention is required to: Achieve and keep unwritten cleanliness Prevent infection/stomatitis Keep the unwritten mucous membrane moist Promote patient comfort5.4 Literature ReviewTo place potentially relevant grounds, I searched The Cochrane Library, Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews, Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health ( CINAHL ) , and Medline ( restricted to 1990-2009, English linguistic communication, and human research ) , including the related links option and diary cross citing for documents non antecedently identified. The hunt produced a figure of articles on unwritten hygiene and VAP in grownup ICU. The Iowa Model encourages the usage of instance studies, adept sentiment, and theories to inform pattern when research findings are non available ( Titler et al. , 2001 ) , leting protocols to be developed based on ââ¬Å" best available grounds. â⬠The Iowa Model begins by promoting staff nurses to place pattern inquiries, triggered either through designation of a job or through new cognition. The pattern inquiry aligned with organisational precedences is best positioned for allotment of back uping resources. Fourteen articles were identified as relevant to adult unwritten attention in the ICU scene and were later appraised ( See appendix 6 ) . They included two systematic reappraisals, two randomized controlled tests ( with equal sample size ) , four non-randomized tests ( or randomized with little sample sizes ) , one comparative test and five adept sentiments. Merely 10 of the 14 articles were specific to the grownup population. Using definitions developed by Stetler, Brunell, Giuliano et Al ( 1998 ) , degrees were assigned that rated the quality or strength of grounds of the 14 surveies. Degrees ranged from Level I ( meta-analysis of multiple controlled surveies ) to Level VI ( sentiments of well-thought-of governments, or the sentiments of an adept commission, including their reading of non-research-based information ) ( Stetler et al. , 1998 ) . The more strict degree of grounds, Level I reports, evaluated the effectivity of pharmacological intercessions included in unwritten rinses and toothpastes in cut downing unwritten bacterial vegetation, dental plaque, and dental cavities. The deficiency of robust research grounds related to direct nursing pattern of unwritten attention in the ICU scene is important for future research. Across the ââ¬Å" best available grounds, â⬠three nursing intercessions were identified for unwritten hygiene attention in the Intensive care unit: 1 ) unwritten appraisal, 2 ) mechanical intercessions, 3 ) pharmacological intercessions. A figure of articles highlighted the importance of regular unwritten appraisal to steer good unwritten attention ( Hayes & A ; Jones, 1995 ; McNeill, 2000 ; O'Reilly, 2002 ) . A meta-analysis performed by Chan and co-workers showed a important decrease in VAP with the usage of anti-septic gargle. The survey, nevertheless, was unable to show any differences in other end points such as mortality, continuance of mechanical airing and length of ICU stay. ( Chan, Ruest, Meade & A ; Cook 2007 ) . The published NICE guidelines, as discussed earlier in subdivision 4.2, recommend chlorhexidine on all MVP5.5 MethodThe appraisal tool that I want introduce to my ICU, is based on the BRUSHED appraisal tool developed by Hayes and Jones ( 1995 ) which been adapted by Abidia ( 2007 ) ( with permission ) to be used by ICU nurses to measure the grade of badness of the jobs in the patient ââ¬Ës unwritten pit. ( See appendix 5 )5.6.1 Invention: How it would be implemented. Education and TrainingThis assessment tool should be used as outlined in 5.3 above. It is to be supplemented with a elaborate instruction bundle to ease preparation. ( See appendix 6 ) It is presently de signated as a ââ¬Ëdraft ââ¬Ë as it has yet to be ratified and approved. This facet of the proposal would be coordinated with the unit ââ¬Ës pedagogue. It is proposed that ab initio, a power point presentation, with some clip for inquiries, enduring about 30 proceedingss, would be used. This would be accompanied by a written booklet to enable staff to reflect upon the process and besides be the first point of mention should any trouble occur. A ââ¬Ëlink nurse ââ¬Ë would be allocated to take the lead with the pedagogue. Link nurses are described as ââ¬Å" Identified nurses within a squad who have expressed involvement in a specialist country and go a formal nexus for the squad. â⬠McKeeney ( 2003 ) . Nurses frequently take upon themselves these functions as portion of their Knowledge and Skills Framework as it provides grounds of their continued professional development. Ideally the power point presentation would be attended by staff at the start or coating of a displacement as there is a A? of an hr convergence that has antecedently been used for preparation intents. It is envisaged that all staff will hold completed their initial preparation within two months. The pedagogue would maintain a signed registry of attendants as portion of the unit auditing. After this initial developing a questionnaire would be used to determine the effectivity of the preparation, to arouse any farther or future jobs and to measure the quality of the processs that are now in topographic point. The consequences of the questionnaire would besides find such issues as to whether the hazard factor has been hazard assessed right, whether farther education/training is necessary or whether any alterations to the new process are needed. It could besides organize portion of scrutinizing the unit which is needed as portion of Clinical Governance.5.6.2 Invention: How it would be im plemented. Administratively and ProcedurallyOral appraisal and attention ( OAC ) are indispensable for the betterment of overall wellness and for the patterned advance towards recovery and well-being of the ICU patients. Without OAC the patient could see serious infections which would take to protraction of ICU stay, increased morbidity, significantly increased costs of attention, and possible mortality. ( Jones Newton Bower 2004. Abidia 2007 Gillam & A ; Gillam 2006.Koeman, van der Ven, Hak 2006 ) the unwritten guidelines ( bill of exchange transcript **** cheque right appendix see appendix 7 ) are based upon a thorough literature hunt. The bill of exchange new guidelines are in conformity with the trust format, which is found in policy Corp 60. The process to follow in order to guarantee smooth execution of the proposed new process is foremost to set up a meeting with my equals and the clinical lead for countenance of the proposal. It would so be forwarded to the Policy Coordinator for look intoing and understanding prior to presentation to the Evidence Based Practice Committee. The commission are responsible for the concluding blessing. When this has been achieved, the guidelines will be forwarded to the Business Unit Lead for printing on the trusts intranet. All trust employees would so hold entree to the bill of exchange guidelines. The clip frame for the execution is hard to accurately buttockss but a period three months before initial instruction commences would be a sensible estimation. The paper work would be checked by the new matrons as portion of their function in our trust is to look into certification5.6.3 Invention: How it would be implemented. Costings. In order to implement this new process in its entireness, from academic exercising into pattern, it is non expected that a heavy fiscal load to the trust will happen. The logistics for implementing alteration are already in topographic point so no new degrees of bureaucratism are envisaged. The costings would be every bit simple as copying paper at ?2.00 per ream. The clip allotment for the pedagogue needed for planning and implementing preparation for about 90 five staff who work in ICU, High Dependence and Coronary Care Units, observing that the demands of the dark displacement may ask some out of normal contacted hours, are the lone other disbursal. Once adopted the process would be a upper limit of ?5.00 per patient per hebdomad. Of class the current costs for unwritten hygiene should be deducted from this amount as they become excess. New equipment as listed in item in Appendix 7 has besides to been taken into history.5.7 What are the sensed /anticipated barriers to alter?Experience dictates that during the busy day-to-day activities of patient attention in the ICU it can be improbably hard to systematically execute such a simple undertaking as everyday unwritten hygiene. There are so many pressing, dangerous events, which take precedence over everything else. Guaranting that oral cavity cleansing is completed sunglassess into insignificance, even looking to be regarded as an optional undertaking. This is farther downgraded as it is recorded simply by a tick in a box that can be unthinkingly given. Hence, in pattern the predominating attitude, the ward civilization that now exists is that ; ââ¬ËIt ca n't be that of import! ââ¬Ë What was one time good pattern has over the old ages become corrupted. This is in kernel why my proposal to present a new process for the unwritten attention of ventilated patients is of import. It is critical that in order to accomplish optimal public presentation such professional patterns are reviewed and revised. The barriers to be overcome are apathy and complacence! The unwritten pit is known to be a reservoir for pathogens to turn and boom. Poor unwritten hygiene can take to complications such as gingivitis, halitosis, dry mouth, plaque formation, dental pits and others that have been antecedently mentioned. There are many factors that may prevent the ICU nurse from executing necessary OAC ( see appendix 8 ) ( Jones, Newton & A ; Bower 2004. Gillam & A ; Gillam 2006. Koeman Ven & A ; Hak 2006. Furr, Binkley & A ; McCurren 2004 )5.8 What schemes will be usage to get the better of these barriers?Roberts ( 2001 ) reported that the bringing of unwritten attention within institutional scenes is fragmented. A reappraisal by Chan ( 2005 ) states nurse ââ¬Ës descriptions of their unwritten attention patterns covered unwritten wellness appraisal, cleansing the unwritten pit and attention of the environing countries. Chan ( 2005 ) findings revealed the undermentioned important factors that influenced ICU nurses in supplying unwritten attention: Their perceptual experiences of the intent of unwritten attention. Their frights about supplying it. The precedence of unwritten attention. Inadequate support for unwritten attention. Rello, Koulenti Blot et Al ( 2007 ) and Chan ( 2005 ) ) besides concluded that their findings indicated that nurses unwritten attention patterns were non grounds based. Munro & A ; Grap ( 2004 ) besides indicated that present unwritten attention preparation should be revised. Their findings besides highlighted the influence of ward civilization on nurses ââ¬Ë precedences in supplying unwritten attention. Appropriate stuffs, equal staffing degrees and the constitution of an evidence-based unwritten attention protocol may in future facilitate the proviso of unwritten attention in the intensive attention unit. ( Chan 2005 Munro & A ; Grap 2004 Rello, Koulenti Blot et Al 2007 ) Oral appraisal is an built-in portion of unwritten attention and should take topographic point upon admittance. Evidence has suggested that early appraisal can cut down both the incidence and badness of unwritten complications. ( ****** ) Once an unwritten appraisal has been carried out it is of import to give appropriate unwritten attention intercessions based upon the single patient ââ¬Ës demands.6.0 EvaluationWhen reflecting upon the literature and the proposal it is of import that the undermentioned standards are considered: ICU patient ââ¬Ës single demands for unwritten attention should be portion of the admittance appraisal. Education of nurses to supply accomplishments in unwritten appraisal and unwritten attention is indispensable. The unit pedagogue can develop nurses to better the unwritten appraisal and sweetening of unwritten attention for ICU patients. The usage of an assessment theoretical account such as the ââ¬Å" BRUSHED â⬠Assessment tool is recommended for the immediate designation of unwritten jobs for every patient and should be carried out daily. The usage of a comprehensive protocol such as the Mouth Care Protocol presented in Table 1 a bill of exchange that will hold to travel to the grounds based commission be for recommended. The frequence of unwritten attention is an country of contention and may depend more on the patient ââ¬Ës status. However, brushing every 12 hours and unwritten dampening at least every two hours while the patient remains intubated is recommended until farther research is done in this country. Some solutions and types of equipment used by nurses for unwritten attention are non optimum and, hence, cautiousness must be applied if they are used. Examples include H peroxide and Na hydrogen carbonate, if non diluted carefully, may do superficial Burnss. Lemons Glycerine Swabs can do annoyance and decalcification of dentitions. Alternatively, chlorhexidine is recommended. Foam swabs are uneffective in taking plaque, whereas the usage of a soft little caput toothbrush is recommended alternatively. Further research is needed to find the most effectual manner to execute unwritten hygiene attention in critically sick patients every bit good as make up one's minding on the most appropriate frequence of unwritten attention. Research is besides needed to find the impact of unwritten wellness and improved unwritten wellness position on patients ââ¬Ë result matthewhawkins66http://www.blogger.com/profile/09887578763750688853noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3888173869769077370.post-70907335528221373582020-01-08T05:04:00.001-08:002020-01-08T05:04:02.575-08:00Jazsie-Stylez is a fashion styling business, which allows... Advertisers spend millions of dollars creating effective television ads and commercials so consumers will purchase their products. Television advertising, the most powerful form of advertising, enables both audio and video advertising messages. Unlike other means of advertisements, like the newspaper, radios, websites and magazines, television advertising is quick and memorable. Based on research reports, millions of people watch television every day, and it is one of the leading leisure activities for human beingsâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦One of the television advertising strategies that leads to the highest product sales is to utilize effective branding and represent products honestly and clearly so that the product is represented clearly in the commercial. An example of this is ââ¬Å"Tony the Tigerâ⬠for Kelloggââ¬â¢s cereal. Tony the Tiger appears in commercials as an animated character interacting with children in a live-action world. To be able to do this, Kellogg and other cereal companies spend millions of dollars annually in advertising. By having characters like these, viewers are able to immediately identify what brand is being presented. Another example is the Bounty commercial form Procter and Gamble. This commercial compares Bounty and bargain paper towels by showing them being used beside each other. This Bounty commercial shows that Bounty paper towels are 50% stronger and more absorbent than bargain paper towels because the commercial creators know that consumers would choose the brand that is known as the strongest. Bounty is a little higher priced, but the commercial indicates that a person can use the towels longer than the bargain brand towels. These commercials make people aware of the brand and cause the viewers to be more likely to choose it over others. Many commercials do not present their brand name clearly, and this leaves viewers confused as to what the commercial is selling. Marijuana Marijuana is a psychoactive drug, and is the most controversial of these types of drugs. The reason being is that there are so many myths and misconceptions that surround marijuana. It is not clear about the addiction potential, physical and psychological problems of marijuana. Marijuana is the third most popular recreational drug in America behind only alcohol and tobacco, and has been used by nearly 100 million Americans (marijuana). Marijuana is widely used and it is estimated that nearly 25% of Americans have used marijuana once in their lives and that 2-5 million people use it daily despite it being illegal. Marijuana is a mixture of crushed leaves, flowers, small branches, stems, and seed of the hemp plant. This plant grows best in tropical climates and can be found throughout the world. Most countries cultivate this plant on purpose. Cannabis Indica species can withstand colder climates (ââ¬Å"Marijuana, history of,â⬠) If marijuana were to become a cash crop it would be the largest grown in the United States. It is one of the most commonly used drugs in the world, following caffeine, nicotine, and alcoholic beverages in the popularity. In the United States, where the route of admission is usually smoking, it also has been called weed, grass, pot, or reefer (ââ¬Å"Marijuana, history of,â⬠). Marijuana is a depressant. The effects of marijuana may vary with its strength and dosage and with the state of mind of the user. High doses can cause tachycardia, paranoia, and delusions (ââ¬Å"Marijuana, history of,â⬠). Marijuana can also have a psychedelic effect in high doses. With this being said, marijuana is classified as both a depressant and a psychedelic. Marijuana does produce some of the same effects as hallucinogens like a LSD or mescaline, but it differs chemically and pharmacologically. Marijuana is made up of many chemicals. There are currently 426 known compounds in the plant. When marijuana is burned there are 1500 additional compounds that are formed. The chemical compounds that are found in marijuana only are called cannabinoids. These cannabinoids are the most active and mind-altering ingredients in marijuana. The primary active component of marijuana is delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), although other cannabin derivatives are also thought to be intoxicating. In 1988 scientists discovered receptors that bind THC on the membranes of nerve cells. They reasoned that the body must make its own THC-like substance. The substance, named anandamide, was isolated from pig brains in 1992 by an American pharmacologist, William A. Devane (ââ¬Å"Marijuana, history of,â⬠). The potency of marijuana is determined by the amount of THC present. All the parts of the plant have different concentrations of THC. So the mixture of the plant material used and the conditions of how the plant was grown determines the potency of this drug sold on the street. The root of this plant has no THC value, the stalk have very little value, there is some THC found in the branches, there is a moderate amount of THC found in the leaves(male has 5 leaves and female has 7 leaves), and the highest amount of THC concentration will be found in the buds, flowers and seeds. The concentration of THC has increased over the past 30 years. Marijuana is 25 to 40 times more potent than it was in the 1960ââ¬â¢s, itââ¬â¢s up from . 2% to 5-8% pure today. Marijuana dates back to 2700 B. C. in ancient China. The plant was used to make rope, cloth, and paper from its fiber. It was during this time that the resins, flowers, and leaves from the plant could also be used for medical use. It was used to treat gout, malaria, and gas pains. It was by 500 B. C. that the Chinese put a ban of the use of the plant because of it unpredictable intoxicating effects. Marijuana was introduced into ancient India mainly for the mind altering effects. Marijuana was used in religious ceremonies the euphoria producing ability. It didnââ¬â¢t take long for the plant to be recognized for its intoxicating effects and its value in making rope and cloth. In America the public didnââ¬â¢t show any interest in marijuana as a recreational drug. It was just used in medicines. It was primarily prescribed legally for a numerous physical and mental aliments until 1940. In fact when Congress passed the Harrison Narcotics Act in 1914, many drugs were removed from the marketplace, but it excluded marijuana. It was not until the prohibition of alcohol that marijuana smoking became prominent. The Mexican immigrants were introducing marijuana along the Mexican border, while West Indian sailors were bringing it into the Gulf States. People no longer could legally use alcohol in and get their intoxicating effects so smoking marijuana became very popular. It became apparent in the 1930ââ¬â¢s that marijuana was being abused and there was an increase in violence because of its use. Tales were beginning to spread of the effects, murder, rape, sexual excess, and memory loss from using marijuana. The federal government tried to scare the public with a film called ââ¬Å"reefer madnessâ⬠, but it actually did more harm than good. In 1935 the states took action and started passing their own laws towards non-medical use of marijuana. In 1937 the federal government stepped up and passed a Marijuana Tax Act that prohibited the use of all non-medical marijuana, the possession and use of cannabis nationwide. Marijuana came back on the scene during the World War II era. It was extensively cultivated during the World War II era, when Asian sources of hemp were cut off (ââ¬Å"Marijuana, history of,â⬠). It was commercially grown. The Philippines were being invaded by the Japanese so there was no sisal plant to make rope. American farmers were actually encouraged to the marijuana plants for rope production. Birds loved the seeds of this plant and when they would leave their droppings it would start wild plants of marijuana to grow throughout the United States. Marijuana became a very popular drug of choice because of its availability. You read "Cannabis and Marijuana Plants" in category "Papers" Today marijuana is a widely used illegal drug among many ethnic groups. Hispanics are among 9. 2 percent of users; non-Hispanic blacks (7. 7% , nearly 8 percent of females used marijuana in the past year vs. 14% of males used in the past year); non-Hispanic whites (6. 7%, nearly 7 percent vs. 11 percent); Asian/Pacific Islanders (2. 0%, 2% vs. 7. %); South Americans (4. 2%, more than 4% vs. 13 percent). It can be found on the street for a price of $250-500 ounce depending on where it is bought. The cheapest is in Oregon at $258 ounce and most expensive in Washington D. C. at $486 ounce. Age itself is one of the most significant variables in understanding marijuana use. Past-year use of marijuana increased with age, to a peak prevalence of about 23 percent among 18 -25 year olds, before declining to about 44 percent among persons aged 35 and older. Among adults, male smoking rates for marijuana are nearly twice those for females. IN the total surveyed population, males were about 70% more likely than females to have used marijuana in the past year (11 percent versus 6. 7, nearly 7 percent). The only exception to the data showing more male smokers of marijuana than females occurs among children and teens. There still remains controversy over the medical uses of marijuana. Proponents are saying that it is useful for treating pain and the nausea and vomiting that are side effects of cancer chemotherapy and for restoring the appetite in people with AIDS (ââ¬Å"Marijuana, history of,â⬠) Modern research uggests that cannabis is a valuable aid in the treatment of a wide range of clinical applications. These include pain relief-in particular (neuropathic pain), nausea, plasticity, glaucoma, and movement disorders. Marijuana is also a powerful appetite stimulant, specifically for patients suffering from HIV, the AIDS wasting syndrome, or dementia (Marijuana). What are the acute effects of marijuana? Marijuana ca n reach the brain through the bloodstream in less than 30 seconds of smoking a joint. It delivers a physical and psychological effect rather quickly. The peak of the effects is usually reached by the time smoking is finished. If a person wants these effects to last longer they would have to consume the marijuana orally from brownies for example. This would allow the marijuana to be absorbed into the system much longer and these effects would last over 2-3 hours. It only takes a single use of marijuana to impair a personââ¬â¢s motor coordination. The person who just used marijuana may think that they are just fine, but they are really clumsy. This kind of thinking from a person under the influence only spells disaster waiting to happen. A person under the influence of marijuana and their ability to follow a moving stimulus is greatly diminished and can last up to 4-8 hours beyond the point of intoxication. This would interfere with their driving skills. Also their ability to perceive light will be significantly impaired and would be a major risk for someone operating heavy machinery. Marijuana has some serious physical effects on a person. Although legalization activists and many marijuana users believe smoking pot has no negative effects, scientific research indicates that marijuana use can cause many different health problems (The health effects of marijuana, n. . ) . Smoking a single joint of marijuana is the equivalent of smoking 15 cigarettes. Marijuana has at least 50% more tar and carcinogenic materials than cigarettes. Because marijuana is not filtered it enters the lungs at a temperature hotter than cigarette smoke and thus drying and irritating the tissues in the lung. Marijuana has been shown to increase the heart rate. Within a few minutes after smoking marijuana, the heart begins beating more rapidly and the blood pressure drops. Marijuana can cause the heart beat to increase by 20 to 50 beats per minute, and can increase even more if other drugs are used at the same time (The health effects of marijuana, n. d. ) It is because of the lower blood pressure and higher heart rate that the researchers have found that a person smoking marijuana has a 4 times greater risk of heart attack compared to them not smoking marijuana. If a person is aware that they have heart disease they should avoid the use of marijuana. Marijuana can hurt the immune system of a personââ¬â¢s lungs. Smoking marijuana can paralyze or destroy the anti-infection white blood cells of the lungs. It is because of this that most smokers will develop laryngitis, pharyngitis, bronchitis, cough, hoarseness, and dry throat. Research indicates that THC impairs the bodyââ¬â¢s immune system from fighting disease, which can cause a wide variety of health problems. One study found that marijuana actually inhibited the disease-preventing actions of key immune cell (The health effects of marijuana, n. d. ) . There have been recent studies that show marijuana can depress T cells. The depressing of T-lymphocyte functions known as ââ¬Å"killer T cellsâ⬠would make a person more susceptible to the AIDS infection. The greatest concern is the fact that marijuana is a drug. Some of the most profound effects occur in the brain. Marijuana produces a sense of euphoria, but it also produces anxiety, confusion and if used heavily-drug induced psychosis. Not to mention the effects on reflexes, vision, and motor coordination. Marijuana has effects on long-term memory, because studies suggest that marijuana will fill a synaptic gap between brain cells which stops the flow of electrical signals. Marijuana users experience burn-out or amotivational syndrome from regular use. They have a lack of concern for the future, loss of motivation, loss of ambition, loss of effectiveness, dullness, diminished ability to carry out long term planning, difficulty in concentration, intermittent confusion, impaired memory, and a decline in work and school performance. There are treatments for marijuana disorders. Marijuana dependence may appear to be very similar to other substance dependence disorders, but the long term clinical outcomes may be less severe. The adults who are seeking treatment for marijuana abuse or dependence have used marijuana nearly every day for more than 10 years and have attempted to quit more than six times (ââ¬Å"Marijuana abuse,â⬠). Let it be noted that marijuana dependence is most prevalent in patients that are suffering from other psychiatric disorders, who are mostly adolescents or young adults. Usually dependence in marijuana co-occurs with other drugs such as cocaine and alcohol. Studies indicate that effectively treating the mental health disorder with standard treatments involving medications and behavioral therapies may help reduce annabis use, particularly among heavy users and those with more chronic mental disorders. Behavioral treatments, such as motivational enhancement therapy (MET), group or individual cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT), and contingency management (CM), as well as family-based treatments, have shown promise (ââ¬Å"Marijuana abuse,â⬠). Success rates of those seeking t reatment are modest and even the most effective treatment for adults will only achieve 50% abstinence in a 2 week period. Those that do achieve a full two week abstinence, more than half will resume use within a year. Across studies, 1 year abstinence rates have ranged between q0 and 30 percent for the various behavioral approaches (ââ¬Å"Marijuana abuse,â⬠). This data suggest that a more chronic care model should be considered for marijuana addiction. The intensity of the treatment can be stepped up or down based on the patients need. The availability of family and other supports are needed. There are currently no medications to treat the abuse of marijuana, but there is ongoing research being conducted. The studies are mostly targeting the withdrawal syndrome of marijuana. For example, a recent human laboratory study showed that a combination of a cannabin agonist medication with loffexidine ( a medication approved in the United Kingdom for the treatment of opioid withdrawal) produced more robust improvements in sleep and decreased marijuana withdrawal, craving, and relapse in daily marijuana smokers relative to either medication alone(ââ¬Å"Marijuana abuse,â⬠). There have been recent discoveries about endogenous cannabin systems inner workings. It raises the possibility of a future medication that would be able to block THCââ¬â¢s intoxicating effects. This would prevent patients from relapsing by eliminating marijuanaââ¬â¢s appeal. References Abbott, A. (2010). Alcohol tobacco and other drugs (2nd ed. ). Washington, DC: NASW Press. Although American capitalism, democracy, and individualism are often seen to be mutually reinforcing the economic, political, and philosophical pillars of American society, Melvilleââ¬â¢s ââ¬Å"Bartleby, the Scrivenerâ⬠suggests that capitalism can dehumanize workers and that its stability relies upon the illusion that it is an inevitable, inhuman system. Bartleby, the Scrivenerâ⬠implies that this system of social and economic relations is ironically threatened by human desire, choice, and preference, the very attributes that seems to shape our individual identities. As such, the primary guardian of capitalist values, in the novella, is the narrator who represses human desire, choice, and preference to ensure the smooth operation of his law office. In Melvilleââ¬â¢s ââ¬Å"Bartleby, the Scrivener,â⬠he argues that work in a capitalist society dehumanizes its employees because the upper class regards them as working tools instead of as people. We will write a custom essay sample on The Dehumanization of Workers or any similar topic specifically for you Do Not WasteYour Time HIRE WRITER Only 13.90 / page One way Melville shows the dehumanization of workers is through the lawyerââ¬â¢s introduction of his three initial employees. In this introduction, the lawyer describes how he sees his workers, which mainly consists of how useful they are to him at certain times. For example, he explains how one of his scriveners, named Turkey, [was] a most valuable person to [him]â⬠in the morning, ââ¬Å"accomplishing a great deal of work in a style not easy to be matchedâ⬠(Melville 8). In the afternoons, however, he considered Turkey to be quite impudent because he was not as productive with his work. In fact, the lawyer even suggested that ââ¬Å"[Turkey] need not come to [his] chambers after twelve o clock, but best go home to his lodgings and rest himself till tea time (Melville 8). Similarly, the lawyer describes Nippers (one of the other scriveners who work for him) as suffering from the evils of ambition and indigestion and as a person who ââ¬Å"knew not what he wantedâ⬠(Melville 10). This description of his workers dehumanizes them because the lawyer does not want to acknowledge the desires or wants of his employees. They are simply being referred to by how well they work for him, based on their usefulness and productivity. The lawyer is representative of how employers in a capitalist society see their workers as merely working devices. Secondly, the lawyer dehumanizes his workers, simply by the way he addresses them, that is, by using nicknames rather than their actual names. Their nicknames are Turkey, Nippers, and Ginger Nut. A turkey is a kind of animal, while Nippers refers to a tool used to squeeze something. Ginger Nut, the office boyââ¬â¢s nickname, is a type of cake that the other workers often eat and the lawyer describes one of Ginger Nutââ¬â¢s duties as the ââ¬Å"cake and apple purveyor for Turkey and Nippersâ⬠(Melville 14). Being described by their use(s) in the office is like stating that these workers have no other qualities/traits or purpose, except to work for the lawyer. Once again, Melville emphasizes the dehumanizing aspect of the capitalist system. According to Marx, capitalists are only able to make profits through the exploitation of their workers. Profits are made by the workers producing more, for their boss/capitalist, than they are actually worth and paid for in wages. Melville argues that the capitalists exploit their workers for cheap labor. For example, the lawyer describes the work of the scriveners, as ââ¬Å"a dull, wearisome, and lethargic affair,â⬠(Melville 16) and ââ¬Å"to some sanguine temperaments, it would be altogether intolerableâ⬠(16). This demonstrates that even the employer thinks that his employeesââ¬â¢ work is insufferable. Similarly, the lawyerââ¬â¢s office building is located on the second floor but only offers a view of some walls. The lawyer himself admits that ââ¬Å"this view might have been considered tame than otherwise, deficient in what landscape painters call ââ¬Å"lifeâ⬠â⬠(Melville 6). These walls allow no view of the outside world and act as a reminder to the workers of where they belong: behind the walls and hard at work. Despite being aware of these issues, the lawyer does nothing to try to improve his employeesââ¬â¢ work, nor does he ask them to share their opinions or concerns regarding their working conditions. They are forced to do work without any regard to their feelings or views. This exploitation is further evidenced by how the lawyer expects his workers to drop whatever they are doing when he needs them and to be at his beck and call. The workers do not have the freedom to express their desires or opinions regarding their work, but rather must simply obey their employerââ¬â¢s orders. For example, when the lawyer wants to finish up a ââ¬Å"small affair,â⬠he extends out his copy for Bartleby to read with a ââ¬Å"natural expectancy of instant complianceâ⬠(Melville 17). Bartleby refuses to perform the task, by saying ââ¬Å"I would prefer not toâ⬠(17). The lawyer is simply shocked to hear this. In fact, he believes that ââ¬Å"[his] ears have deceived [him], or [that] Bartleby had entirely misunderstood [his] meaningâ⬠(17). This shows that the ââ¬Å"expectancy of instant complianceâ⬠is instilled within he capitalists/upper class and that there is no room for workers who refuse to cooperate with the capitalists system of production, because a refusal to cooperate involves voicing oneââ¬â¢s opinion. However, machines and tools do not prefer or want anything; they simply act predictably in accordance with mechanistic laws. Only human beings have free will, preference, and the knowledge that they have freedom of thought and expression. The lawyerââ¬â¢s surprise at Bartlebyââ¬â¢s refusal to perform his duties indicates that workers are simply viewed as instruments of labor and production that are considered to have no choice or sense of opinion. In conclusion, the capitalists system greatly dehumanizes its workers. They are exploited by the capitalists for cheap labor, which is used to fuel their profits. Workers are seen as machines, who must abide to the capitalist system of production, regardless of their working conditions or work tasks. Any refusal to obey these norms of production is looked upon unfavorably and can even lead to the dismissal of the worker from his/her workplace. matthewhawkins66http://www.blogger.com/profile/09887578763750688853noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3888173869769077370.post-47392035353193919622019-11-29T03:46:00.001-08:002019-11-29T03:46:06.227-08:00Zuma beach Essay ExampleZuma beach Essay Zuma Beach holds the status of a state beach and shows its coordinate at 34à ° 0à ´ 58.18 N, 118à ° 49à ´ 19.51 W of California at 30000 Pacific Coastal Highway in Malibu, California (ââ¬Å"Zuma Beach County Park.â⬠). The geographical features boast about it for being one of the longest and popular beaches in Los Angeles County. The beach is reckoned for long and wide sands. Among many features and facilities Zuma holds an excellent condition for the surf lovers. To add more feathers in hat the beach has been ranked among the healthiest beach referring its clean water condition (Garbee, Gottesman, Helper, Bates Schwartz 38). It is also the famous in California for its finest white sand strands. To coordinate the geographical layout of the place, it gives sense to the famous surfing beach. As it lies open on the coast beyond Santa Monica Bay; the heavy breakers take the transit crushing in from the north to Zuma, creating perfect wave formations for the surfer on board. The majestic sun catches the body surfer too, to let them try to catch the big one itself (ââ¬Å"Zuma Beach Surf Report and Forecast.â⬠). Zuma is also unique for it changes the colour of the ocean and the cliffs into various shades of green; depending on season and sun light. Approximately during mid December to March the beach hosts whale watching for the hikers at Point Dume, 1 mile from the beach, giving a good chance to spot California Gray Whales. Unfortunately, among all these beauties; in recent past the beach has been through many disputes with the nude beach hoppers, residents and the county sheriff (McKinney 67-68). Apart from moral policing, other infrastructural problem creeping in is the traffic heading to beach at Point Dume are taking Zuma Beach County Park, where space is small and with the volley ball nets, lifeguard watch tower, sun bathers, surfers and the beach fares it falls short in its layout and elegance (Riedel, Crowell 115, 137). Since the region around the Point Dume is a seasonal passage for the Whales, any extraction or refinery activity of petroleum will harm both, leading to ecological and human catastrophe (Emery 241). As we have traced some of many that could be, the solutions can mostly addressed to the high voltage pre existing security system of Lifeguards from Los Angeles County Fire Department with their robust structure of 14 watch towers and one of 4 L.A. County Section Headquarters stationed at the center of the beach (ââ¬Å"County of Los Angeles Lifeguard Division.â⬠). The first problem was the advocates of the nude beach. The agitation of the residents and sheriffs towards this problem is sensitive enough to stop it for once and all with the iron hand of the Court Order, which the U.S. citizens are, ought to obey (ââ¬Å"Los Angeles County.â⬠). As per LA County Fire Department actions the congestion of the car parking problem can be taken care of, if the traffic take a round about at Point Dume to the secluded section of the beach. For the safety and evacuation system for any odd event the beach goers have reasons to rely on the robust and proven operational layout of the LA C ounty Fire Department (Los Angeles County Fire Department). On the petroleum issue the safest possible way to execute the task is to set up a hinterland pumping station, connecting the source area through underground pipelines; even underneath the seabed till the location. In short, to preserve the wonders of Zuma, it needs to reorganise and extend the operations of the existing organisation and a creative approach of the industrial and urban development plans. Zuma being a beach cum park, it is packed with the facilities and movements like the volley ball nets, lifeguard watch tower, sun bathers, surfers and the beach fares that leaves hardly any space for parking, leading to a destruction of the beachââ¬â¢s aesthetic and set-up. The three that I read all had allegory and symbolism in them. All of the stories include some characteristic of death. Nathaniel Hawthorneââ¬â¢s stories seem to reply mainly about religion and the teaching of a lesson. In The Ministerââ¬â¢s Black Veil, I noticed a lot of allegory and symbolism. Th main character, Mr. Hooper, seems to be based upon a real person that Nathaniel Hawthorne must of read about. The black veil over the ministerââ¬â¢s face symbolizes a secret that he isnââ¬â¢t afraid to show anymore. Free Essays on Nathaniel Hawthorne Free Essays on Nathaniel Hawthorne Nathaniel Hawthorneââ¬â¢s novel, The Scarlet Letter is based on the puritanical custom of affixing a giant red, letter ââ¬Å"Aâ⬠to anybody that committed adultery. The novel centers on the adulterous Puritan Hester Prynne. Throughout the novel, she loyally refuses to reveal the name of her partner. The novel is generally regarded as Hawthorneââ¬â¢s masterpiece and as one of the classics of American literature. However, it also reflects the typical, partriarchical attitude of both puritan society and of contemporary society. For instance, even the definition of the word, ââ¬Å"Scarletâ⬠carries with it sexist connotations. Scarlet as defined in Websterââ¬â¢s New World Dictionary is ââ¬Å"sinful, specifically whorishâ⬠(Webster 532). In sum, the main plot of the novel is this: Hester Prynne is a women living in seventeenth-century New England. She is convicted of committing adultery. At the beginning of the novel, Hester is forced to wear a scarlet letter, A, on her dress as a sign of her guilt. She steadfastly refuses to reveal the identity of her adulterous partner. However, her husband eventually realizes who her lover is and takes revenge on him. Eventually, her dying lover publicly admits his part in the adultery. Primarily the novel centers on the theme of woman as seductress, woman as seducer. Again, this theme seems to harken back to the same stereotypical and sexist notions of woman as either Madonna or whore. Regardless of the fact that her lover ultimately is punished for his sins as well, it is Hester who is portrayed as the one to blame for his ââ¬Å"fall.â⬠In the novel, the public confession of her lover, Dimmesdale, the ââ¬Å"sinfulâ⬠priest seems to absolve him of his sins by making such a public confession. The same is not true for Hester. She is doomed at the end of the book to live a life full of loneliness and denial, and in no way does she come close to obtaining the freedom and love that she had desired. It seems as though... Free Essays on Nathaniel Hawthorne Nathaniel Hawthorneââ¬â¢s ââ¬Å"Young Goodman Brown,â⬠widely regarded as one of his finest works, illustrates vividly how society and culture can influence oneââ¬Ës sense of reality (53 ). Goodman Brown is everyman of general intelligence striving to live and achieve a better life (60 ). Faith and righteousness were daily themes in Puritan society, however when Goodman Brown faces change in his perception, the once solid foundation is washed away. The journey into the wilderness enlightens Brown to societal truths amidst his struggle within himself and against fellow men. It is a dreaded walk on the dark side of the human heart (26 ). Consuming most of Hawthorneââ¬â¢s tale is a test of faith. For three months Brown has been married to a young woman symbolizing his faith (60 ). She even carries this name and lets her role in the story tie to that aspect of her husbandââ¬â¢s life. Brown calls for his wife three times as he stands before the devil at the alter. Goodman then cries, ââ¬Å"My Faith is gone.â⬠(9 ) As Brown is drawn into the deepest shadows of the forest and enters the devils sacred service, Hawthorne dramatizes his feeling that once commitment to evil has been made, its purpose must prevail by securing a shelf in Goodmanââ¬â¢s soul. There is no struggle of power to oppose it and in this tale the power is so unequal that Faith, supposedly the Devilââ¬â¢s antagonist, is drawn into the camp of the enemy (11 ). She appears at the service as a baptismal candidate along with Goodman, a faint insinuation that Faith has her own covenant with the Devil. This also suggests that her complicity may be prior to and deeper than Brownââ¬â¢s, as Faith couldââ¬â¢ve played a role in the path of her husband (12 ). Her possible involvement then brings on a submerged irony in the manner in which Faith comes to meet Goodman when he returns to the village, as if she had not been present in the forest. She greets him in a manner inn... Free Essays on Nathaniel Hawthorne Nathaniel Hawthorne Hawthorneââ¬â¢s ââ¬Å"Rap pucciniââ¬â¢s Daughterâ⬠is a timeless short story that still easily applies to common fears of today. Like in Mary Shellyââ¬â¢s Frankenstein, Hawthorne uses literature to address the fascination many of us have with science verses religion. When Hawthorne describes Rappucciniââ¬â¢s creations in the garden, our imaginations could compare the likenesses to his daughter as well. He states, ââ¬Å"Several, also, would have shocked a delicate instinct by an appearance of artificialness, indicating that there had been such commixture, and, as it were, adultery of various vegetable species, that the production was no longer of Godââ¬â¢s making, but monstrous offspring of man depraved fancy, growing with only an evil mockery of beautyâ⬠(1296). In this description Hawthorne points out that Rappuccini has destroyed the boundaries of science by acting as a God-like figure. Rappucciniââ¬â¢s creations are evil concoctions that only illus trate his dark genius instead of a fatherââ¬â¢s or creatorââ¬â¢s love. Hawthorne uses Beatrice as a symbol of Rappucciniââ¬â¢s obsessive love of science while also using her words to tell the reader the seriousness of his condition. Hawthorne write, ââ¬Å"...and at the hour when I first drew breath, this plant sprang from the soil, the offspring of his science, of his intellect, while I was but his earthly childâ⬠(1303). In her comment Beatrice points out that her fatherââ¬â¢s love for manipulating nature far surpasses any love or connection he feels with his daughter. The evil science has consumed his personality and destroyed his humanity. In short, Hawthorne seems to be addressing the public to warn them about the dangers of excessive science. He seems to believe that the realm of God and Godââ¬â¢s creations should not be manipulated by man. If we allow ourselves to become consumed with controlling nature, our evil creations will in a sense backfire and ruin even the best intentio... Free Essays on Nathaniel Hawthorne Although ââ¬Å"The Birthmarkâ⬠by Nathaniel Hawthorne was written in the mid-1800s, its themes and ideas are still a part of society today. The 19th century was a time of change, just as this, the millennium, is a time of great change. Hawthorneââ¬â¢s ideas about science, beauty, and life still play a major part in our lives, despite many improvements. Even today, people try to play ââ¬Å"Godâ⬠and change things that nature has put in place. Itââ¬â¢s human curiosity; how much can be changed, how many things can be perfected? The themes in this short story religion, gender, and sciencewere relevant in Hawthorneââ¬â¢s day, and still are many years later. The theme of religion is hidden in the desire to erase the birthmark. In trying to ââ¬Å"perfectâ⬠Georgiana, Aylmer is testing Godââ¬â¢s creation. He doesnââ¬â¢t believe that how God created Georgiana is perfect, and he is obsessive about making her his idea of perfection. Aminadab, Aylmerââ¬â¢s ser vant, tries to tell his master to leave the birthmark alone. He tells Aylmer that if Georgiana were his wife, he wouldnââ¬â¢t worry about something so trivial. However, the scientific ideas on Aylmerââ¬â¢s mind wonââ¬â¢t let him forget the birthmark. He believes he can remove it with the help of science. Even so, science has no part in creation, according to Hawthorne, and Georgianaââ¬â¢s death after the removal of the birthmark signifies that theory. Her death is Hawthorneââ¬â¢s way of showing that judgment and perfection are Godââ¬â¢s dutiesnot manââ¬â¢s. In todayââ¬â¢s society we still battle this idea; is perfection attainable through science? Maybe people think so- thousands have cosmetic surgery performed every year as a way of trying to make themselves more beautiful. Religion has taken a step back in society today, so the significance of perfection by God has also been moved to the back burner. But, underlying all the surgeries performed today, is the question: Is it right to change what was given to you by God?... The reason for this lies in our countryââ¬â¢s youth. The United States formed at a time when technological advancements allowed many more people to leave a legacy in its dawning. These advancements led to a creation of literary history. I find it hard to say one person had a larger effect on anything than anyone else, but some people do seem to stand out more than others. In helping to form, or even by just translating how others helped to form this country, authors were able to compile a great deal of literature. This literature has left us a way to learn about our history and many of the important people in it. One of these important people, whom also happened to be an author, was Nathaniel Hawthorne. He wrote about his own experiences, including his observations of other peopleââ¬â¢s experiences. His life led him to the right places at the right times. Today anybody can pick up his works and take from them the knowledge of what it was like to live during his times. Anyone who reads his work inherits just a little bit of his style into their own writing. There is so much of his own work, on top of so much work pertaining to him, in this world that it is hard for him not to have made an impact on it. He has served as a translator, taking in the influences of his time and especially the people of his time, to in turn influence the future. Nathaniel Hathorne was born July 4, 1804, in Salem, Massachusetts. Here alone is where he gained much of his influence, both through his familyââ¬â¢s history, as well as in his own time. Much of his persona can be understood by knowing some facts of his life. His father died, while at sea, of yellow fever in 1808. Due to a leg injury in 1813 Nathaniel was unable to attend school and was thus home taught by Joseph Worcester for a short time. In 1819 he attended Samuel Archerââ¬â¢s School, in preparation for college. In 1820 he was tutored by Benjamin Oliver. ... matthewhawkins66http://www.blogger.com/profile/09887578763750688853noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3888173869769077370.post-4298140782104996382019-11-21T18:46:00.001-08:002019-11-21T18:46:03.536-08:00International Trade and Globalization Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 3500 words - 1International Trade and Globalization - Essay Example The paper will analyze the globalization of international business, for instance, in regard to market entry techniques and the importance of multi-national global brands and corporations, from different perspectives. Comparative advantage determines international trade. Theory of comparative advantage argues that the common rate of profit and the standard of wages are not at equilibrium internationally as they are in a domestic market. The assumption of comparative advantage theory is that capital cannot be moved from less profitable to more profitable sectors of production. If this is the case, it would lead to an equalization of the profits rates like in the domestic market. Consequently, the wage rates are not equalized in the international market due to lack of labor movement. A nation is said to be at a comparative advantage in the production of commodities if the opportunity cost of generating the product is lower compared to other countries. The comparative advantage theory is concerned with a trade of homogeneous products. On the other hand, new trade theory focuses on intra-industry and inter-industry trade. Intra-industry trade is the exchange of similar products within a common industry for example goods at various levels of production. Intra-industry trade is the exchange of similar products within a common industry for example goods at various levels of production. Inter-industry trade is the exchange of goods from various industries, for instance, trading agricultural products for equipment and machinery. matthewhawkins66http://www.blogger.com/profile/09887578763750688853noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3888173869769077370.post-67977153610898955712019-11-20T16:25:00.001-08:002019-11-20T16:25:06.826-08:00Analytical essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 750 words - 1Analytical - Essay Example What remains in her mind is the illusion that her father is still alive and has the control over her. At one event with the townpeople, she even told them that his father is alive and kicking. "Miss Emily met them at the door, dressed as usual and with no grief on her face. She told them that her father was not dead...Just as they were about to resort to law and force, she broke down, and they buried their father quickly." (Brooks and Warren,1959) The death of her father, although it creates a terrible anguish in her heart give her the signal to exercise her freedom. Thirty years later when she met Homer Barron---the love of her life. As the reader is told, Miss Emily was loved by many men of the town. Therefore it is not surprising that a man like Homer would fell in love with Emily. On the other hand, her only desire is to find infinite happiness in life and he found it within this man. In short, the two get married. Her decision to settle down was good enough for she knows no one can control her. The relationship could be somewhat strange but the revelation that she kills her husband is not so surprising. The fact that she suffers from severe trauma and mental insanity , she could commit such criminal act. Her acceptance of illusion and denial of reality only shows that she is out of her mind. Even until her death, anguish and suffering still remains. "After Miss Emily died, the townpeople had to go remove her body. The unsuspecting thing that happened in her house was that she had been sleeping with Homers old decayed body for many years. Even after she kills Homer Barron, she sleeps with his corpse - something that did not bother her at all." (Death As Central Theme In "A Rose for Emily".) Faulkner wants his readers to understand that Emilys life is like a rose. A rose, particularly a red rose can represent many things such as love or hatred. Her relationship with her father and her lover can be compared to a red rose. According to the 2000 census, there are 3,407 senior citizens day care centers operating in the United States, serving primarily people with dementia (including Alzheimers disease) and the frail elderly who do not have dementia though experts suggest that this number is fast going to rise as more and more people require and seek these services, (Lakdawalla, Bhattacharya, Goldman, & National Bureau of Economic Research, 2001) The Sunset Senior Citizens Daycares mission is to provide a program of social, recreational, and health activities and services in a group setting that will keep our clients as comfortable as possible and at the same time caring for their immediate individual needs In the recent past, the demand for senior citizens day care centres has considerably grown. The lifestyles of the population has changed making the people need care at significantly early age thus the need to have more of this centres. This makes a venture such as opening this centre economically viable. In recent years, the age at which people adult day care services has considerably become lower as a result of the lifestyle diseases among other things. Therefore it seems that people age faster they did before. Family structures are also evolving and people prefer to have their aging loved ones cared for in these centres so that they get a chance to go make a living, (Kane, 1986). The technological environment changes rapidly and therefore peopleââ¬â¢s needs also follow these trends. The clients will need a variety of foods that are healthy and at the right times. Also, change is an inescapable part of both social and organizational life. The concept of organizational change is in regard to organization-wide change, as opposed to smaller changes such as adding a new person, modifying a program. Examples of organization-wide change might include a change in mission, restructuring operations, new technologies, mergers, major collaborations, and rightsizing. Change in organizational strategy is an attempt to alter the organization`s alignment with its environment. Organization change might also focus on any of the basic components of organization structure or on the organization whole design. The Nature and Causes of Resistance to change Employees resist change because they have to learn something new. In many cases there is not a disagreement with the benefits of the new process, but rather a fear of the unknown future and about their ability to adapt to it. Forces of Change The general environment is parted in to different dimensions: the international, the economic, te technological, the socio-cultural and the political-legal dimension. External Forces External forces for change originate outside the organization. Because these forces have global effects, they may cause an organization to question the essence of what business it is in and the process by which products and services are produced. There are four key external forces for change: demographic characteristics, technological advancements, social and political pressures. Each component is discussed below: Demographic Characteristics The workforce is more diverse and there is a business imperative to effectively manage diversity. So, organizations need to effectively manage diversity if they are to receive maximum contribution and commitment from employees. Technological Advancements Technological changes are becoming increasingly important to many organizations, because of the rapid rate of all technological innovation. One major area of change involves equipment, thus a change in work processes or work activities may be necessary. Social factor Nearly all of the issues in change efforts revolve around people. You can change technologies, but unless people support the new systems, problems are bound to crop up. No matter how good a change seems on paper, if nobody will support it, it`s probably not good idea. Political Pressures Political events can create substantial change. Although it is difficult for organizations to predict changes in political forces, many organizations hire lobbyists and consultants to help them detect and respond to social and political changes. Internal Forces These forces for change come from inside the organization and may be subtle, such as low morale, or can manifest in outward signs, such as low productivity and conflict. Internal forces for change come from human resource problems and managerial behaviour (decisions). Levels of Change Mullins, (2005) argues that, change can be studied in terms of its effects at individual, society, group, organization, national and international level. However, because of this, change at any one level is interrelated with changes at other level, and it is hard to study one area of change in isolation. For example, when HSBC decided to embark on using new modern banking technology, it also embarked on training its staff on how to use that technology and its importance in their day to day activities, otherwise that technology could not help if employees could not support it or if that technology could not be friendly trough the costumers. In addition, Hersey, (2006) discussed levels of change by identifying four levels: knowledge change, attitude change, individual behaviour change and organizational or group performance change. Hersey ,Robbins, (1990) commented on group and individual change, he argued that, at individual level, the change attempts is to affect an employee behaviour, through either training , socialization and counselling as strategies the management can use when they target at individual change. In that case of group change, he argued that, interventions such as sensitivity training, survey feedback and process consultation are some of strategies the management can use if it targets to group change. TYPES OF CHANGE There are two kinds of change according to Robbins, (1990), are unplanned change and planned change. Unplanned Change This change, is that change which can just happen, for instance, when managing director of certain company decides to resign immediately, is a type of unplanned change to the board of directors, as they are force to find another managing director as early as possible to run their company. Planned Change Planned change otherwise, is those changes which organization knows about: where are objective is to keep the organization viable and current. Mullins, (2005) argues that, most planned change is triggered by the need to respond to new challenges or opportunities presented by the in anticipation of the need to cope with potential future problems or external environment. It represents an intentional attempt to improve, in some way, the operational effectiveness of the organization. RESISTANCE TO CHANGE Resistance is any conduct that serves to maintain the status quo in the face of pressure to alter the status quo. According to Goldberg (1999), individuals are not really resisting the change, but rather that may be resisting the loss of status, loss of pay, or comfort. They believe that it is time that we dispense with the phrase resistance to change and find a more useful and appropriate types for describing what the phrase has come to mean that employees are not wholeheartedly embracing a change that management wants to implement In present economy, change is all-pervasive in organizations. It happens continuously, and often at rapid speed. Because change has become an everyday part of organizational dynamics, employees who resist change can actually cripple an organization. (Mullins, 2005) Folgers Skarlicki (1999) claim that organizational change can generate scepticism and resistance in employees, making it sometimes difficult or impossible to implement organizational improvements. Resistance is an inevitable response to any major change. Individuals naturally rush to defend the status quo if they feel their security or status is threatened. Why People Resist change in the workplace In recent days, companies, government department and institutions, whether public or private, are no longer have a choice, they must change to survive. Unfortunately, people tend to resist change. It is hard to change an organization, let alone an individual. This puts increased pressure on management to learn the subtleties of change. Employees and managers view change differently; top level management sees change as an opportunity to strengthen the business and to advance in their career, but for many employees, including middle managers, change is never sought after or welcomed: it is intrusive and disruptive. The below 10 reasons are the best describe why some people resist change. Fear of failure Resistance to change can be rooted in fear. Some employees may feel the need to cling to the past because it was a more secure, predictable time, during periods of change. If what they did in the past worked well for them, they can resist changing their behaviour out of fear that they will not achieve as much in the future. Creatures of habit Doing things in the same routine, predictable manner is comfortable. Asking people to change the way they operate or think is asking them to move outside their comfort zone. We have always done it this way, so why do we need to change? becomes the rallying cry for people who have difficulty changing their routines. In some cases, employees may deny or ignore the change simply because it requires them to experience something beyond their normal method of operation. No obvious need Some employees may see a change only from the perspective of the impact it has on them and their particular jobs. They may fail to recognize the positive impact of the change on the organization as a whole, not seeing the big picture. Thus they may find the change disruptive and totally unnecessary. Their attitude may be, if it is not broke, why fix it? Loss of control Familiar routines help employees develop a sense of control over their work environment. Being asked to change the way they operate may make employees feel powerless and confused. Concern about support system Changing the organizational structures may shake their confidence in their support system. They may worry about working for a new supervisor, with new employees or on familiar projects because they fear that if they try and fail, there will be no one there to support them. Closed mind Some employees seem to have the attitude , please do not confuse me with any facts or supporting documentation about this change: I have already made up my mind! employees with this attitude approach the change process with their minds firmly made up, muttering , no way! during discussions and explanations of the future. Unwillingness to learn Some employees, hesitant to try new routines, express unwillingness to learn anything new. They may say, I already know all that I need to know. Like resistant employees who have already made up their minds that the change will not be productive, employees reluctant to learn something new impede the organization`s growth and adaptation to change. They also hinder their own personal growth and development. Fear that the new way may not be better If things have been going wall, some employees may resist change because they fear that the change will not result in improvement. Focusing only on their part of the operation, they fail to realize that change is needed in order for the organization to stay competitive. Their current status is quite sufficient, and they wish to maintain business as usual. Fear of the unknown Employees can resist change simply because it is something unfamiliar. Not knowing much about the specifics of the change, they may imagine a worst case scenario, which might be very scary. They let fear of the unknown become their rationale for not giving the change a change. These employees may acknowledge that a problem exists and agree that a change might improve it. However, they worry that the proposed change might actually make things worse. Their fear causes them to place roadblocks in the movement toward change. Fear of personal impact Uncertainty is the biggest of employee resistance to change. In the face of impending change, employees may become anxious and nervous. They may worry about their ability to meet new job demands, they may think that their job security is threatened, or they may simply dislike ambiguity. UNDERSTANDING AND MANAGING REDUCE RESISTANCE TO CHANGE It is important for managers to learn to manage resistance because failed change efforts are costly. Costs include decreased employee loyalty, lowered probability of achieving corporate goals, a waste of money and resources, and difficulty in fixing the failed change effort. Involving people from the beginning, clearly explaining the reasons for the change, having a clear strategy, direction, and vision, and respecting the viewpoints of other people are all parts of the process. Using strategic measurement can also be way of building support. Starting out with a problem, and working other people to come up with a solution, can be far more effective than proposing a specific solution and trying to rationalize it. People often do not like change they cannot control. However, if they lead or have a substantial influence on change, they are more likely to embrace it. As the leader, you must take the time to understand resistance and you may have to come at it from several different angles before it is conquered. You must understand what your employees are feeling, as well as thinking. Ways to reduce resistance to change: Involve interested parties in the planning of change by asking them for suggestions and incorporating their ideas. Clearly define the need for the change by communicating the strategic decision personally and in written form. Address the people needs of those involved. Disrupt only what needs to be changed. Help people retain friendships, comfortable settings and group norms wherever possible. Design flexibility into change by phasing it in wherever possible. This will allow people to complete current efforts and assimilate new behaviours along the way. Allow employees to redefine their roles during the course of implementing change. Be open and honest. Do not leave openings for people to return to the status quo. If you and your organization are not ready to commit yourselves to the change, dont announce the strategy. Focus continually on the positive aspects of the change. Be specific where you can. Deliver training programs that develop basic skills as opposed to processes such as: conducting meetings, communication, teambuilding, self-esteem, and coaching. OVERCOMING RESISTANCE TO CHANGE Employee resistance to change is a complex issue facing management in the complex and ever-evolving organization of today. The process of change is ubiquitous, and employee resistance has been identified as a critically important contributor to the failure of many well-intend and well-conceived efforts to initiate change within the organization. To close those gaps, managers should know how to face and overcome resistance to change. Although there are no certain solutions, several techniques at least have the potential to decrease or eliminate this resistance. There are three key conclusions that should be kept in mind before recommending specific approaches to overcome resistance. Firstly, an organization must be ready for change. Just as a table must be set before you can eat, so must an organization be ready for change before it can be effective. It is better to use survey to evaluate if a company is ready to undertake a change effort. Secondly, organizational change is less successful when top management fails to keep employees informed about the process of change. Thirdly, employees perceptions or interpretations of a change significantly affect resistance. Employees are less likely to resist when they perceive that the benefits as a change overshadow the personal costs. At a minimum then, managers are advised to provide as much information as possible to employees about the change, inform employees about the reasons rationale for the change, and provide employees the opportunity to discuss how the proposed change might affect them. CONCLUDING REMARKS In many cases, vast amounts of resources are expended by organizations to adjust employees to a new way of achieving desired goals. The natural propensity for individuals to defend the status quo presents a set of challenges that management must overcome in order to bring about desired change. Management must also seriously take into account and consider the myriad of problems that may result if they are not responsive to issues of resistance in workplace. Generally, whatever the changes inside an organization might be, and whatever the reasons that made these changes necessary, a good way of implementing the changes successfully is for a manager to treat the participation and communication with his employees as integral parts of the change process. matthewhawkins66http://www.blogger.com/profile/09887578763750688853noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3888173869769077370.post-68178992162459482392019-11-13T16:16:00.001-08:002019-11-13T16:16:03.680-08:00Popular Music Essay -- Entertainment Introduction Popular music is popular afresh, and itââ¬â¢s everywhere.
